On 24th of April 1871 Auckland is proclaimed a Borough. There is now a City Council again for the first time since 1852.
1872 .Competition for the new Hospital building won by Philip Herepath. Prize of £50.

1873
A massive fire destroys 54 buildings [ Wellesley st west & Grey St ]

1873
Bylaw requiring a walking pace around corners for horses & vehicles [ remains on force until 1902 ]

1873
Newton West School by Philip Herepath is built. [ demolished now the site of Don Mckinnon Drive.]

1873
A contest for the design of Western Park [ originally known as City Park]is held. Sir George Grey and Judge Thomas Gillies donate specimen trees.

1875
The Greek Doric Church in Beresford street is constructed for the Beresford Street Congregational Independents. This is one of New Zealand’s first poured concrete buildings.[ exant- recently renovated now Hopetoun Alpha ]

1877
The Plane trees in Greys Avenue [then Grey Street] are planted as the first beautification scheme undertaken by the Auckland City Council.

1877
The new Auckland Hospital building by Philip Herepath is completed. On opening night is it a fantastic sight fully illuminated at every window by gas lighting. [demolished 1963]

1877
100 girls enrol at the new Auckland Girls School in Upper Symonds Street [11 years later a funding crisis results in this establishment sharing space with the boys school in Symonds St.]

1878
The Queen ’s Hotel [?] K’rd. Richard Keals Architect.

1878
City West School in Howe Street is built [ extant] [ Edward Mahoney ]

1879
Western Park is opened to the public.

1879
St.Davids Church, Khyber Pass. This wooden structure by Edward Bartley will be replaced by the existing brick church in 1909.

1879
Auckland Grammar School opened in Symonds St by Prince Alfred. This wooden building by Edward Mahoney costs £6,000. The Howe Street Barracks are now utilised by the Home for Orphan & Neglected Children [ founded 1871 ] which up to this time has been housed in a building in Fort Britomart.
